Children and Young People's Independent Sexual
Violence Advisory Service

A CHISVA (Children and Young People’s Independent Sexual Violence Advisor) is a specialist support worker who helps children and young people affected by sexual abuse or sexual violence.

About CHISVAs

They provide emotional support, practical guidance, and clear information in a safe, confidential, and child-focused way.

CHISVAs can also liaise with schools, police, and other services, making sure the young person’s voice is heard and their needs are understood.

They support whether or not the young person chooses to report to the police, and they also offer guidance to parents and carers.

What a CHISVA Does

A CHISVA can support children, young people, and their families by:

  • Providing emotional support and a safe space to talk and be heard.
  • Offering practical support, such as help with appointments, referrals, or accessing services.
  • Explaining the criminal justice process in clear, age-appropriate ways.
  • They can support the young person through police investigations, updates, pre-trial visits, court appearances, and aftercare.
  • Advocating on behalf of the young person, liaising with police, social workers, schools, and health professionals to ensure their voice is heard.
  • Helping the child or young person stay safe through risk assessments and safety planning.
  • Supporting parents and carers, helping them understand the process and how best to support their child.
